Puerto Princesa Palawan Underground River

The Puerto Princesa Subteranean River (also formerly known as the St. Paul underground river) is THE main tourist attraction in the City. It has recently, this April 2012, become so busy since it was officially Awarded as one of the New & Wonders of the World, that the City is requesting that visitors book at least 2 weeks in advance.

It is also a Unesco World Heritage site. Every year they make
new improvements to the tourist facilities and the resorts as well. Dave and I have been there twice and I still enjoyed it the second time around. It has been nominated as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World for it's uniqueness. The site contains a full 'mountain-to-sea' ecosystem and has some of the most important forests in Asia.

It is approximately an hour and forty minutes to Sabang by car from PP City Center.  There you check into the Tourism Office, or if you have hired a local guide, then they will do it for you. You then board a gas pump outrigger boat for a 15 minute ride to the entrance to the cove of the river. The views along the way of the steep, sheer limestone cliffs set in back of the emerald green sea are worth the boat ride itself!

At the cove to the Underground river, you are checked in again and you are given life vests and a hard hat helmet.  You then hop into a smaller paddle outrigger boat with another trained guide, for a round trip inside the cavern of approx. 45 minutes.
The park has a limestone karst mountain landscape with an 8.2 kilometer navigable underground river. A distinguishing feature of the river is that it winds through a cave before flowing directly into the South China Sea. It includes major formations of stalactites and stalagmites, and several large chambers.

This one is called the Mushroom...can you guess why?
